Joseph Carrese, M.D., M.P.H. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Carrese is a core faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.
In August of 2005 Dr. Carrese was named a Blaustein Scholar in the Ethics of Clinical Practice at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, and at the same time he was named Director of the Berman Institute's newly established Program on Ethics in Clinical Practice. In these roles Dr. Carrese works with colleagues to study ethical issues that emerge in the daily practice of medicine in various clinical settings, and to design, implement and evaluate educational curricula for residents addressing ethical issues in clinical practice. Dr. Carrese has a particular interest in examining ethical issues that arise in the context of cultural diversity, and his work in this area includes empirical research as well as conceptual writing.
Dr. Carrese teaches clinical medicine and clinical ethics to medical students, residents and fellows, and he teaches research ethics to fellows and faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is Chair of the Ethics Committee at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and is Vice-Chair of one of the Institutional Review Boards at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Carrese is the primary care doctor to a panel of patients who are seen at the Bayview Medical Offices internal medicine clinic.
Dr. Carrese graduated from Williams College and SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, and he completed a fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he studied medical ethics and anthropology. He then joined the faculty in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in 1994. He was supported by a Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars award from 1997-2002.
Dr. Carrese was recognized in April 2008 at the 31st annual Society of General Internal Medicine meetings when he was given a National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education for his body of work in the area of clinical ethics education. In particular, Dr. Carrese was recognized for achievement in 2 main areas: 1. Scholarship in Educational Program Development in Clinical Ethics, and 2. Scholarship in Teaching about Clinical Ethics.
